Jardin Botanico de Caridad – A Charming Garden in Cuba

Last updated: October 5, 2024

The most intriguing attraction in Vinales, Cuba, is the Jardin Botanico de Caridad.

The compact, shady garden is cared for by two sisters of the Caridad family.  A modest entrance gate decorated with star fruits and guavas welcomes visitors to its curiosities. Although modestly sized, the garden is a botanist’s delight and contains 189 species of orchids and many medicinal and ornamental trees and shrubs.   These include mango, starfruit and papaya trees, and begonias and orchids.

I came with my tour guide, Manuel, from Locally Sourced Cuba, a wonderful tour company that had been guiding our group for 5 days through Cuba. I noticed Manuel’s reaction to this garden after we entered. He was afraid of the doll heads attached to the trees.  I believe the Caridad sisters practiced Santeria, a Caribbean religion that combines Roman Catholic saints and Nigerian nature Gods or orishas.  Dolls can be used by Santerians to worship orishas, such as the plant deities.

There are eccentric elements such as doll heads attached to trees in the gardens.

Not sure if I like the look of the dolls either!

The Caridad sisters are of African descent yet they have a Chinese ancestor too, which is not uncommon due to the history of Chinese people in Cuba.

One of them helped guide us through the garden, explaining and identifying plants and noting many of their medicinal qualities.  She pointed out to us a tall cacao tree with pods, the first time in my life I’ve ever seen them growing outdoors.

Cocoa trees bearing fruits.

A cycad palm in the garden.

A small brick cottage sat in the middle of the garden and is just as charmingly eclectic as the garden.  It was crammed with lovingly arranged dolls, photographs, diplomas, doilies, and Christmas decorations. A table outside displayed many fruits and seeds grown on the ground.

If you are ever in Vinales village to visit the surrounding tobacco farms, I recommend you visit this charming botanical garden.  It is one of a kind.
